Foraging Ethics + Prairie Flora

The Ethics of Foraging

At Prairie Flora, every plant is sourced with intention, respect, and a commitment to the long-term health of the land.

Many of the herbs used in our formulations are native to Nebraska's prairies and woodlands. Rather than harvesting these plants from the wild, all native herbs are cultivated by a local herbalist. Growing native plants ensures that wild populations remain undisturbed while supporting the preservation of our region's botanical heritage.

Some of the plants we work with are abundant non-native species that have become naturalized or invasive. When appropriate, these plants are responsibly foraged from clean environments far from roads, agricultural fields, chemical treatments, and synthetic fertilizers. Harvesting these species can help reduce pressure on local ecosystems while allowing us to make use of plants with remarkable skin-supportive properties.

Foraging is guided by a simple principle: take only what is abundant, leave plenty behind, and never harvest in a way that diminishes the health of the landscape. Plants provide food and habitat for pollinators, birds, and wildlife, and their role within an ecosystem extends far beyond their use in skincare.

We believe that truly botanical skincare begins with stewardship. By choosing cultivated native herbs and responsibly foraged beneficial plants, Prairie Flora seeks to honor both the wisdom of traditional herbalism and the living landscapes from which these plants come.

The goal is not simply to create effective skincare, but to foster a deeper relationship with the plants, people, and prairies that make it possible.
