Calendula: Sunshine Preserved in Petals

There is something timeless about gathering calendula in the heat of summer. Their golden-orange petals seem to hold sunlight itself — bright, resinous, and warm beneath your fingertips. Long treasured in herbal traditions, calendula has been used for generations to soothe, comfort, and nourish the skin.

In the garden, calendula blooms generously, often flowering from early summer until frost. The flowers are best harvested in the late morning after the dew has dried, when their petals are fully open and vibrant. Fresh blossoms can be infused immediately, or slowly dried for teas, oils, and skincare rituals throughout the colder months.

One of the simplest and most beautiful ways to work with calendula is by creating an infused oil.

Golden Calendula Infused Oil

Ingredients

  • Fresh or dried calendula flowers

  • Organic olive oil or jojoba oil

  • A clean glass jar

Method

  1. Fill a clean jar loosely with calendula blossoms.

  2. Cover completely with oil, ensuring all plant material is submerged.

  3. Seal and place in a warm sunny window for 2–4 weeks, shaking gently every few days.

  4. Strain through cheesecloth and store in a dark glass bottle.

The finished oil carries a deep golden hue and can be used on its own or blended into balms, body oils, facial treatments, and salves. Calendula pairs beautifully with chamomile, lavender, rose, and yarrow for skin-supportive formulations.
